MOUNT Isa will be a fast food capital of Queensland when Hungry Jack’s opens its doors in the city. The city avoided this year’s top-10 list in a Diabetes Queensland study that compares the number of fast food restaurants with population levels. A Diabetes Queensland spokesperson said if Mount Isa was to have a Hungry Jack’s, it would jump into third position - behind only the Central Highlands and Rockhampton. “Hungry Jack’s would increase the density to one in 2531 people,” the spokesperson said.  Another restaurant - such as a second Subway - would put Mount Isa at the top of the list, the spokesperson said.  Mount Isa has eight restaurants; the equivalent of one restaurant per 2847 people.  It is currently 11th on the list behind Townsville, Western Downs and The Whitsundays.  Cairns has 54 restaurants, but has one restaurant per 2909 people. Data was collected from chain fast food restaurants including Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Pizza Capers, Hungry Jack’s, Red Rooster and Subway.  It does not include cafes or takeaway outlets.  The North West Hospital and Health Service appendix, released last month, said obesity in North West residents was 29 per cent higher than Queensland’s average.  Diabetes Queensland said Mount Isa’s percentage of overweight adults was 67.2 per cent - higher than all local governments in the top 10.  Its percentage is higher than Logan (61 per cent), Goondiwindi (65.2) and Gladstone (65.6). Diabetes Queensland chief executive Michelle Trute said resource hubs with large transient populations - such as Mount Isa, Rockhampton and the Central Highlands – were magnets for fast food chains.  “Fast food outlets are on almost every corner in some of these communities, and healthy eating options for workers seem to be scarce,” she said. Ms Trute said resource companies should consider the long-term financial and productivity effects of an overweight workforce.  “The high concentrations of fast food outlets in many mining and resource sector regions is probably, in part, a reflection of the high number of fly-in, fly-out and drive-in, drive-out workforces,” she said. “While this might be convenient in the short term, people are putting their long-term health at risk.”  Mount Isa City Mayor Tony McGrady said it was up to residents to decide what to eat.  “I personally don’t believe councils should be dictating to the general public what they can and can’t eat,” he said.  Cr McGrady said some fast food outlets might cause obesity, but there were campaigns by federal and state governments to increase health awareness.
